# InDesign Connector

1. [**Install the plugin**](https://exchange.adobe.com/apps/cc/0596c428?pluginId=0596c428\&workflow=share)**.** Log into the plugin with your Lob account credentials.
2. **Open the InDesign file which you want to convert to a Lob template.** Ensure in the InDesign Pages panel that you have the page selected which you want to convert.
3. **Fill out the required template settings fields in Lob Connector** — name, format, size, etc.
4. **Identify which text or image content you want to be variable.** You can either select the text or image element on the canvas then click “Mark as merge variable” in the Lob Connector, or put double curly brackets around the dynamic text and the plugin will automatically detect it as a merge variable.
5. **Click “Create New Template” to convert the design into a template.** You will be asked if you have permissions to share your fonts with Lob, and we will notify you if any assets aren’t optimized for print.
6. **Your template should be created within 1-2 minutes!** You can then view it in the Lob dashboard and use the Visual Editor to make edits. The next time you open the plugin, you’ll see a second button to replace an existing template — push visual changes without creating a new template each time.

**Is InDesign Connector able to support all fonts?**

**Why doesn't my InDesign icons look correct in the template?**

In InDesign, ensure you are linking each InDesign icon to individual icon files (PNG or SVG). If you are using a single PDF for all icons with each frame cropped to show a different icon, the template will likely not display the icons correctly.

**Will all layers from my InDesign file be editable in the Visual Editor?**

All text layers and merge variable layers (regardless of if it’s text or an image) will be editable in the Visual Editor. Images that are not merge variables will be flattened on template creation and will not be editable in the Visual Editor. When the image needs to change, you can update the image in the InDesign file and the create a new template or replace the existing template with that update.

**Does InDesign Connector support multi-page templates?**

The only multi-page template you can create through InDesign is a letter. 

* When "Letter" is selected as the format, a "Pages" dropdown type option appears
* Dropdown defaults to "Current page"
* User can switch to "Custom", which reveals an input field for a page range (e.g. 1-2, 3-5, 2,3,4-5)
* Input accepts integers only, minimum value 1
* When multiple pages are selected, the merge variables section shows merge variables from across all selected pages (not just the page currently in view)
* Replace template is disabled for multi-page letters — multi-page letters always create a new template; single-page letters and all other formats have the option to replace an existing template

**If I have multiple pages in my InDesign file, how do I know which page I’m creating the template from?**

In the “Pages” panel in InDesign, make sure you have the page selected which you want to export.

**My text is centered in InDesign but not after it’s exported to Lob. How can I troubleshoot this?**

Ensure your text frame alignment is set to “Align Center” in InDesign. Sometimes the text will appear centered in InDesign even when the text alignment is not explicitly set to “Align Center”.

**I’m getting a “File Not Found” message when clicking from the InDesign plugin success screen to the template in the Lob Dashboard. What does this mean?**

The template may still be loading in the dashboard, so please wait a few minutes and then refresh the Lob dashboard template page.
